When people think of an "artist" they generally think "someone who can paint or draw well".. but I personally don’t believe the gifting of an artist lies in the ability to paint or draw, though that’s what I was led to believe for the majority of my life.
Instead, I believe the gift of an artist lies in our ability to see beyond the surface. It’s the way we view the world. The gift of an artist is our ability to see things with clarity and depth that goes beyond that of the average person.
We often say musicians have a musical ear; meaning, they can hear with clarity and depth in a way that the average person cannot and could never quite understand. The gift didn’t necessarily give them the “skills” needed to play an instrument, but it without a doubt allows the learning to be a much easier process. If they can hear it, they can mimic it.
While new skills and techniques play a significant role in the progression of an artist, I believe the maturing of ourselves is what does the most transformative work. Our personal journey is what develops and matures the lens we view the world through.
When comparing my work from ten years ago to today, the increase in the level of artistry is beyond evident. But it wasn’t because I took a life changing class or studied color theory, etc. (Both beneficial things to do)
For me It was becoming a wife, it was becoming a mom twice, it was forgiving those I hated, it was learning what I liked and disliked, it was understanding why people do the things they do, it was listening to my friends, meeting new people, it was being open to the views of others..
I believe the development in our gift of sight significantly correlates with the maturing of ourself on a personal level. The lens we view the world around us through matures as we do.
And if you can see it, you can paint it.
